Internet slang' main use
Internet slang is used for social websites to make typing and communicating easier, some sites that use these symbols are Facebook, Twitter and MSN. These sites have been designed to recognize and insert an image that represents them. Other sites and programs are not programmed to do this. Most People will recognize almost every bit of slang I've gone over if they go on the internet regularly. Some people use some things such as lol in real life to show that they found something funny but not funny enough to laugh.

Symbol and Word slang
So there is symbol slang and there is word slang, but there is also slang where it uses words and symbols or numbers. these are the least commonly used parts of internet slang. Some of these are gr8 (great), h8 (hate), m8 (mate), l8r (later), l8 (late), 2 (too, to or two), 1st (first), 2nd (second), 3rd (third), 4th (fourth) ect. with the 'th' ones, b8 (bait), thr3w (threw) this is just an example of how '3' can replace 'e', s1ck (sick) the same thing occurs for '1' to 'i' or '0' to 'o'. as you can see these are all to make things easier like the others or make some words look different to stand out. In my opinion These are the least common internet slang as most people find it pointless or use phones which makes it harder to bring this slang into use as it all requires to change to symbols or numbers. Some of this slang is used in sports and other things that require ranking, these are all the 1st, 2nd,3rd,4th and ect.
Word Slang
Other than symbol slang there is also word slang. This is the abbreviation of words or sentences to a few letters. Like the symbol slang most people will recognise a lot of the word slang. Most of them are just the first letters of each word put together. Here are some of the most basic ones, lol (laugh out loud), fml (f**k my life), lml ( love my life), dtf ( down to f**k?), dw (dont worry), hru (how are you?), wbu ( what about you), rofl (roll on floor laughing), brb (be right back), js (just saying), jks (jokes), asl (age, sex and location), bday (birthday), bf (boyfriend of best friend), bff (best friends forever), bfff (best f**king freind forever), dnm (deep and meaningful), eod (end of discussion), nwa (ni**as with attitude), gaf (get a life), gf (girl friend), gday(good day), tbh (to be honest), gl (good luck), ily (i love you), msg (message), sry (sorry), thx (thanks), txt (text), ur (your), wru (where are you?), omg (oh my god). As you may have noticed in the list i created for you most of them are the first letter of each sentence. This is just to make it easier and faster for people to communicate on the internet.

Symbols
Some of the most commonly used Internet slang is a combination of symbols, numbers and letters, I'm about to tell you about some of the symbol orientated slang. most people that use the Internet will understand the basic slang, but some more advanced stuff will confuse people. some basic symbol slang are :) smiley face, <3 love heart, ;) winky face, :P tongue face, :D big smile, :L laughing face, :@ angry face, :/ unsure face, :O surprised or offended face. :') happy crying face and :'( crying face. These are all used and understood symbols on sites such as facebook, twitter and tumblr. On the sites these symbols are recognised and sometimes made into actual pictures making it have a better appearance. While on other less advanced sites or less social run sites wont recognise and replace these symbols with pictures to represent them. So Its not worth using a lot of these symbol faces on unsocial sights as they may go unrecognised or confuse others, its best to use them on social sights a s they are recognised and understood.

Internet slang
Internet slang is the shortening of words, sentences or
actions to short letter form. Some forms of this are lol (laugh out loud) or
fml (f**k my life). They have been created on web 2.0 by users to make typing
to other people faster and easier, most users will now lots of the slang in a
short time of using the internet to interact with other people. Other than
slang there are also some symbols and letters that put together represent
something on some websites. Such as : and ) makes J (a smiley face), lol (laugh out loud) or < and 3 makes <3 ( a love heart). So
internet slang has been created by internet users for internet users to make
typing easier and faster.
